The Story Behind
The South Texas Equality Project is a coalition of organizations that work to advocate for, celebrate, uplift, educate, and provide support to the LGBTQIA+ community of the Rio Grande Valley. STEP is an ongoing partnership between different organizations and individuals focusing on the common goal of creating a more affirming community for LGBTQ+ people in the Valley.

Founded in 2014, by four member organizations, STEP has since grown to include participation from over thirty member organizations. Throughout the year, STEP hosts educational forums, support groups, fundraisers, meetups, and other events for the benefit of the LGBTQ+ community. We also host monthly meetings open to any member of the community and our allies where we address issues confronting the community, brainstorm ways to uplift the community, and discuss ongoing and upcoming projects. STEP also works with local media sources to educate them and expand the narrative around sexuality and gender diversity in the Valley.

One of STEP's most important events is our annual Pride celebration. Previously known as Pride in the Park and now rebranded as RGV+ Pride, this multifaceted annual celebration includes educational workshops on various aspects of LGBTQ+ culture, community, and identity as well as social meetups aimed at including different identities within the community, a resource fair highlighting LGBTQ+-friendly service providers and local businesses, and drag shows featuring local performers. Pride is an important opportunity to celebrate our community and also provides LGBTQIA+ people of all ages a chance to connect, find community, and learn more about resources.
